My opinion is that HP is a very good series. Why do people think that their life revolves around this series? It is a well writeen and very popular series and I just think that people are just too gullible especially for works of fiction. HP parties? Come on! Even well written books have limits! It is good to realize that it is fiction and not get too carried away with it all. I just cannot believe all of the merchandising and all of the other things that are out here for HP. This is just nuts! Why can't people just talk about a subject and just be cool about it instead of just so gung ho? I would like to hear your opinion of this phenomemon.

I have all the HP books and movies. I read loads of Hp fanfiction and even have tried writing my own. I own HP posters, stickers and shit like that. I join Harry Potter communities on LiveJournal. I've had IM convos just talking about the books and what I think will happen. I can't wait for the seventh book! LOL I'm obsessed.

i started to read HP books just because of someone special. but then, all the HP books do have the power that attracted me to continue read on it. i could said J.K. really earn my very first heart for kind of... fiction? non fiction books. but yet, HP is the one and i think will be the only one who i'll read besides all those regular books that i'll read.

about is hP that good? hmm, personally i've no idea. as i said, i read it just because of someone special. so,... don't really have any comment about the books.

why not? i mean, there's tons of merchandis for britney spears, and most people don't like her, so why not hp? it's the best series i've read, and i, like maria, have tons of merchandise myself. the books, the movies, the tapes and cd's, a harry potter doll, a stuffed animal of hedwig, and harry's broomstick.

Well, I am usually a wee bit synical, and, perhaps, a little crotchity, so I read the first hp book just to say I had done so, and I read the second just to see what happened next, and laud a'mighty I've been suckered in. I love them, and have read them all several times. They are excellent non-complicated escapist reading, and they are oh so good.

Fortunately, I haven't gone so far as to buy all the merchandise that is pedaled: but there is ....

Oh well, you see what I mean?

true. all of you have a point. i just don't think there has to be mass merchandising and huge hype on everything. it is good. but it is not that good. does this make sense? hell, word of mouth is just great and if it is that good, it will sell. carpe diem, right? let the buyer beware in all sense of the word. i am cynical as well and don't believe that all that crap is necessary. it is just not worth it. j.k. rowling has so much money she will never spend it all.

but the readers will keep buying even though they know thats not worth even though if J.K. publish till the 60th books of HP, those people will just crazy to kill up from the night till the day or till next day ti just get the first hand of her book of the first week of the publish.

It may not be necessary, but fandom takes some pretty interesting forms. Remember that the word "fan" is short for "fanatic," so all the folks who buy all the merchandise and do all the chat groups and read and write fanfics and are obsessive like that are what fandom's all about. Me, I love the HP books and enjoy the movies, but that's about all I need and that's fine with me.
But although I may not understand it, I would not put down anyone for being obsessive over it either. It takes talent and devotion to the subject matter and characters to write fanfic, for example, and I've gone and read some of it, but I know I haven't the talent to write a syllable of it myself.

I'm the same I could never right a fan fic in my life. however I do have all the books on cd, and have all the sound track cd's and 3 of the movies in audio discription and the fourth one as normal. but personally I love the books over the movies any day! cant wait for book seven, reading the fan fics is just not enough I want to know the real end to the story!!! *grins*

I have not picked up any of the Harry Potter books and only seen parts of some of the movies. As a 25 year old guy, I can't imagine actually sitting and reading Harry Potter instead of something a bit more mature. It's good that kids are so into it and willing to read, but I just wonder if its a disservice because it takes time away from reading other, more classic books. If you're using the series as just a quick, "escapist" read (as someone else said), that's fine, but if it accounts for your entire reading list, that's a problem.

Damn! I hadn't come across this post. Damn, damn, damn! I knew I was right, I knew it god damn it! This is so freaking frightening; it scares the heebie jeebies heck out of me. Wake up people, it's time to take your lives back. Wake up, she's taking your money, your money! Come out from under the spell, hurry while there's still time! Yikes!

Harry Potter is the best fiction book I have ever read and the only fiction book I really truly love. It is so perfect, a perfect mixture of fiction and reality. The reality is homework, friendship and so on. It's just the right book. And I don't mind the mass merchandising, like the inventing of every-flavoured beans (I t ried the mand some realyl taste horrible and some very good) and other Harry Potter things. And I love reading fanfic myself. So yeah, I really love it myself.

When it comes to Harry Potter, I would say someone's obsessed if they've got the books and movies in more than one language, gone and bought every Harry Potter poster they can get their hands on, (even if it meant buying them from somewhere like Ebay), and anything else, that I wouldn't do.Whoever said just keeping Harry Potter as your reading list, is right. Broaden your horizons, if you wish.

OK, I'm one of those weird folks who is not way into HP. I mean, they are all right, and some sections of the books are better than others. But personally, I don't think Rowling is all that good of a writer. I've seen much better writing from less famous authors than she is. For whatever reason, she struck gold with HP. I think she's got great ideas, just isn't always the best at expressing them in her words. I have read the books, and will read the next one, but I'm not all panting and out of breath waiting for it to come out. Grin.
